Kenashi is ideally located within the charming resort town of Nozawa Onsen in the Nagano prefecture of Japan. Nozawa Onsen is very easily accessible from Tokyo by Shinkansen (bullet train) or bus. Within Nozawa Onsen, Kenashi is currently one of the only lodges located on the piste, and yet also offers a short walk to the center of town, not requiring transportation up and down the ski mountain.
Kenashi is true ski-in/ski-out. It’s nestled at the foot of the Karasawa ski slope – a wide-open ski piste that runs approximately 2.8 km from its top. The lodge is served by two lifts – the Karasawa Pair Lift servicing the Karasawa slope, and the Nagasaka Gondola-Link Pair Lift, connecting the Nagasaka Gondola in the next valley – downhill and only seconds away! The Karasawa slope itself is wide and gentle; ideal for beginners and young children. Watch your children speed down the gentle Karasawa ski run from the warmth and comfort of your own lounge!
From Kenashi, it’s approximately 60 meters to the cleared road that leads to the village center. From Kenashi it’s a 10-15 minute walk to the O-yu spa bathhouse that marks the heart of the old village, and its restaurants, bars and famous hot springs. The picturesque walk winds through the rustic streets of a traditional Japanese village. The famous Nakao No-yu bathhouse is only 300-400 meters from Kenashi.
Kenashi is the ultimate in luxury on-slope accommodation. Wake to vistas of the Northern Japan Alps and Mount Myoko to the west, and the sun rising over Mount Kenashi and the valley in front, to the east. Click into your skis or snowboard at your front door and slide seconds downhill to the chairlifts. When the sun goes down and the lifts close, absolute peace and tranquility descends, only to be briefly broken by the excitement of the occasional snowplough grooming right past your front door!
Kenashi is a single house with three floors. Each floor has its own kitchen, bathrooms, living and dining areas. Depending on group size, there are five accommodation options available to guests:
- The whole of Kenashi
If your group is large enough, the whole of Kenashi is available as an option accommodating a total of 18 people over 8 bedrooms. All floors may be inter-connected so as to really provide ease of flow for the guests between levels. There are large combined spaces to mingle, or enough room for people to have ‘their own space’.
- The Penthouse floor (self-contained)
The Penthouse accommodates 6 people. It has three ensuited bedrooms in total (two bedrooms with king beds, and one bedroom with 2 single beds). All bedrooms have amazing views of Myoko Valley and Mt Huichi to the west. The living room has massive raked cathedral ceilings and a full view up Karasawa Valley so you watch the kids ski down from the comfort of your living room or even the kitchen! The Penthouse is equipped with entertainment system and sound system, as well as a fully modern open kitchen. There is also a loft tatami room overlooking the western views down the valley for quiet reflection, a relaxing afternoon tea, or even a bit of morning yoga. There is also a washer and dryer available.
- The Middle floor (self-contained)
The Middle floor accommodates 8 people. It has three bedrooms in total (two bedrooms with king beds and one bedroom with 4 single beds). There are two bathrooms and a fully equipped kitchen in an open plan living area. All the bedrooms have phenomenal views into the Myoko valley. Like the Penthouse, the Middle floor has views from its living room right up Karasawa Valley so you can watch the kids improve while you take a break and put your feet up. The living room is equipped with LCD TV and all the comforts of home. There is also a drying room so you can start each morning with dry boots and gloves! There is also a washer and dryer available.
- The Ground floor (self-contained)

The Ground floor is self-contained and includes a fully equipped open plan kitchen and living room with a large LCD TV. There are expansive views down into the Myoko Valley from the Ground floor but in seasons of extra high snowfall (which is often), huge mountains of powder tend to partially block some of the view…which most people see as a good thing! The Ground floor is shared with Kenashi’s House Manager, who has their own separate self-contained quarters. There is also a fully functional laundry for the use of all guests.
- The Middle floor with overflow to the Ground floor
If the Middle floor is not large enough for your group, it can be combined with the Ground floor to accommodate a total of 12 people. The Ground floor has two extra ensuited bedrooms (one king bed bedroom, and one bedroom with two single beds). Together with the Middle floor there are five bedrooms in total. It also a self-contained separate fully equipped open plan kitchen and living room with large LCD TV.
